Detailed description of Torrey Pines Municipal Golf Course, North Course

Torrey Pines Municipal Golf Course is a Public, 36 hole golf facility located in La Jolla, California. The facility has two 18-hole championship golf courses. They are The Torrey Pines North Course and The Torrey Pines South Course

The Torrey Pines North Course first opened for play in 1957. The North Course was designed by William F. Bell.

Both Torrey Pines North and South are traditionally designed courses with coastal views. The South Course is the tournament course and definitely the harder of the two courses, although, both courses are used for the PGA Tours Buick Invitational of California.

Par for the course is 72. From the back tees the course plays to 6,647 yards. From the forward tees the course plays to 6,118 yards and plays to a par-74. The longest hole on the course is #1, a par-5 that plays to 520 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 3, a par-3 that plays to 121 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 8, the 436 yard par-4 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole at Torrey Pines North Course is # 16, a par-4 that measures 338 yards from the tips.

Played this course as part of a tournament - shotgun start and shamble format. Recent rains and getting this course ready for the pros in a few weeks resulted in very heavy 5" tall wet rough. This, along with cart path only, and a tournament resulted in a 5.5 hour round! Probably under normal play, expect 4.5-5 hour rounds. The course is about one year past a redo by Tom Weiskoph and was in super shape. The greens were perfect but did bounce and release a bit as is common with new greens. The layout is easier than the south course as it is much shorter in length. The redo has resulted in a much more uniform course with grass everywhere and perfect greens. While the south course is more famous, most golfers will get much less beat up by playing the north. And, the views of the ocean and La Jolla can't be beat. A really fun and fair layout. I would play it more often but I live in San Diego county and not in San Diego City so I have to pay the normal high tourist rates - bummer!

Would travel: 30-60 Miles, Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again, Better than average course for the area, Expensive and worth it

It's difficult to write the review as I'm looking at it from a locals perspective. I would be happy to play this course every day. Lay out and views and conditioning are generally really nice. If you are from out of town...it's expensive but worth playing once a year just for the experience. You will recognize almost every hole from the Buick, Farmers and US Open on TV.

I earned a complimentary round on the north course because I am a regular volunteer when the PGA come to Torrey Pines for the Farmer's Insurance. For women, the north course is the more challenging course over the redesigned south course which is much harder for men!

I played in the first group at 0615. Our foursome finished in 3hrs. 50min. walking. I've played in the late morning and it takes 41/2 hours as the course fills up. The fairways and greens are in the best shape I've seen in years. Maybe due to the 5-year Golf Enterprise experiment; the City of San Diego needs more tourist tax dollars and they're putting more maintenance into this municipal course and ignoring it's step sister Balboa Golf Course. If you do plan to play Torrey north or south, bring your "straight-ball driver" because the bermuda rough, that is slightly higher than a golf ball, and not worthy of U.S.Open height, will eat you up! The course is in excellent shape, did I mention the greens, not super fast and not slow either.

Played in a Men's club event 3 weeks before PGA Tour Farmers Ins Open. Tees, Fairways and Greens were as good as any I've seen. Greens were fast and true. Putts break toward the ocean on the North @ Torrey. Remember this and you'll score much better. The rough was brutal !! They grow it prior to the Tour stop and then they usually start to thin it out afterward. I plan on going back for another event in March and hope the rough is more playable. Pace of play was a bit slow but it is typical, especially in competitions. These 2 courses are Muni courses for San Diego City residents and I defy you to find a better value than these 2 seaside tracks for scenery, ambiance and challenge.

Torrey North offers a more user-friendly trip along the La Jolla coast than its more famous sister the South. With relatively few round-wrecking holes, the North won't beat you up like the South does and instead offers you the opportunity to shoot a good score if you can keep your ball below the pin on the tilted greens.

Small driving range on matts for warmup only. If CPO, definately walk. Views are great, much easier than South course and much less expensive as an early morning walk up. Wife is a high handicapper and enjoyed it. My second time around this year and greens were in good shape this time.

Fairways and greens don't compare to South Course. Rough is mowed closer. Greens had been punched in two weeks before and were very bumpy, almost unputtable.

Am I the only one that thinks that the North Course is terribly overrated? The layout is a flat, boring muni stuck on the side of a cliff that, except for a few holes near the ocean, doesn't offer much. The course is not well kept, with most of the turf being crab grass. It lives on it's reputation, and for San Diego residents, it's a bargain, but I can think of 6-7 other courses I'd rather play in San Diego than this one, especially for the out-of-towner rate. Driving range is TERRIBLE.

Would travel: 30-60 Miles, Not Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: Average course for the area
